BIGiDESIGN Ti Ultra Pen Giveaway

Chadwick and Joe from BIGiDESIGN are no strangers to well-made metal pens, and have ramped it up a notch with their latest: The Ti Ultra.

Not only will this pen fit over 750 of your favorite ballpoint, rollerball, and gel ink refills, you can easily convert it into a fountain pen by swapping out the standard grip section with the provided fountain pen grip section and nib.

I have one Machined Raw model, provided by BIGiDESIGN, to give away to readers of the blog, and we will have a separate review of this pen coming up in the coming weeks. Read the rules below and enter away!

First Look: BIGiDESIGN Ti Arto

I finally have a pen barrel for the Uni-ball Signo DX refill.

I FINALLY HAVE A PEN BARREL FOR THE UNI-BALL SIGNO DX REFILL!!!

To say I’m excited about the BIGiDESIGN Ti Arto is a bit of an understatement. Ever since Kickstarter pens became a thing, the Uni-ball Signo DX (UM-151) has been left out in the cold, despite being the best gel ink pen on the market. It’s refill design isn’t compatible with many others, thereby leaving the market open to Parker and Pilot G2 compatible refills.

Sure, you could hack and slash the DX into other barrels, but few people want to go that route. They want a pen barrel that will fit their favorite refill easily, and the Ti Arto does just that. In fact, it fits over 200 refills, even the mini-sized D1. And it fits them all well.

How BIGiDESIGN accomplishes this is with an internal compression cone within the nose cone of the pen. You unscrew the barrel above the grip section, slide in your refill, then as you screw the section back on the internal nose cone compresses and tightens around the refill. As you can see in their project video, you can adjust the amount the refill is exposed, and it does require a little playing with it to get it just right. Well, for me it does, because I am super anal-retentive.

Did I mention it fits the Uni-ball Signo DX?

I tried a few different refills and they were all dead solid perfect. This is a fun pen to have in your arsenal for sure.

Titanium is BIGiDESIGN’s calling card, and that is your only option for this campaign. Which, for $65, is a great deal for a titanium barreled single cartridge pen. This one happens to fit more than 200.

I backed this pen the moment it went live - in fact I was backer #1. Getting this prototype in hand from Chadwick and Joe only solidified my thoughts on this pen. It’s really good and I can’t wait to get the final version in hand.

My thanks to BIGiDESIGN for sending me this pen at no charge for purposes of this review.

Ti POST RAW Pen + Stylus From Big Idea Design

I have been a fan of Chadwick Parker and Joe Huang's Kickstarter pen designs since they released the PHX-1 back in 2011. While that pen no longer sees action in my rotation their Solid Titanium Pen + Stylus still hits the page frequently, loaded out with an 0.3 mm Pilot Hi-Tec-C Cavalier refill. The design is excellent, unless you want to post the pen. The Ti POST RAW changes that.

Chadwick was kind enough to loan me one of his prototypes for a quick look and I am pleased with the new design. The main feature is the cap is able to post much deeper into the barrel as opposed to near the very end of the barrel in the previous design. The threads are also wider and longer, making for a more secure fit when the cap is posted. This gives the pen an improved overall balance.

While this is essentially an iterative design, it is one that was much needed for those who want to securely post their Ti pen. The other features, such as the ability to add a stylus tip and use a wide variety of refills, have gone unchanged and provide the excellent options available in their other offerings.

Their Kickstarter campaign for the Ti POST RAW has cruised past it's initial $5000 goal and is sitting above $40K with three weeks to go. Be sure to check it out if you are looking for a great EDC titanium pen. I did.

Thanks for the loaner Chadwick! I'll be mailing it back your way this week.
