The Galen A5 Leather "Everyday" Notebook and Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen: A Review

The Galen A5 Leather "Everyday" Notebook and Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen: A Review

(Susan M. Pigott is a fountain pen collector, pen and paperholic, photographer, and professor. You can find more from Susan on her blog Scribalishess.)

Galen Leather and Vanness Pens sent Pen Addict two products for review: the Galen A5 Leather Notebook in Crazy Horse Forest Green and a Scrikss 419 fountain pen in indigo. I decided to review them together, using the pen to test the notebook and the notebook to test the pen.

The Scrikss 419 Fountain Pen in Indigo

Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen Review

Scrikss is a Turkish pen company established in 1964 in Istanbul. The 419 model is a reproduction of a pen created by Scrikss in the past, and it is a limited edition. It comes in a cardboard box with Galen branding.

Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen

The pen is made from acrylic resin and has a clear ink window. I was surprised to discover that the pen is a piston filler because the pen is so small and light.

Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen Piston

The Scrikss 419 is a diminutive pen, measuring 125mm/4.9 inches capped, 117mm/4.6 inches uncapped, and 150mm/5.9 inches posted, with a grip diameter of 9.16mm. It weighs next to nothing even when fully inked (unposted) (8.21 grams).

Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen Cap

The clip is gold-toned with the Scrikss logo and the cap ring is engraved with the Scrikss name.

Although the cap threads are located above the grip, your fingers still touch them, at least partially. But the threads are smooth so the pen is comfortable to hold.

The medium nib is 23k gold-plated stainless steel. It's a simple nib engraved with the Scrikss logo.

The piston is hard to turn at first. Once you get it in motion, however, it moves more smoothly. The pen doesn't hold much ink--maybe .5 ml.

Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen Ink Window

When first inked, the medium nib was wet, sometimes leaving blobs of ink in its wake. But, the longer I wrote, the drier it became, to the point that it suddenly stopped writing. You can see this in the photo below. At the top of the page, the ink is much darker and flows well. It gets lighter and drier and then stops writing mid-sentence.

Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen Writing

The only fix for this is to manually push the ink down with the piston. Then the process starts again: too wet, just right, dry, then nothing--a frustrating experience.

Scrikss 419 Indigo Fountain Pen Drawing

In addition to the inconsistent ink flow, the medium nib is a little scratchy. It isn't terribly bad and might be fixed by using micro mesh.

I'm just not impressed with the pen at all. It's too small for my hand (but for people who love small pens, this would be a plus). It feels flimsy, the piston is finicky, the nib is inconsistent, and I found the writing experience unpleasant. $35.00 might be reasonable for a piston-filled fountain pen. However, the problems I had with ink flow and nib inconsistency make me hesitant to purchase another Scrikss pen.

The Galen Leather A5 "Everyday" Notebook

The Galen A5 Leather Everyday Notebook

Galen's leather notebook in Crazy Horse Forest Green is simple and beautiful. It arrives in a black magnetic-closure box.

The Galen A5 Leather Everyday Notebook Packaging

The green leather is smooth to the touch and has variations that add to its character. Over time, scratches, nicks, and fading will make it even lovelier. The leather is thin, so the notebook doesn't feel overly heavy. The only branding is on the back cover, and it is tasteful.

The Galen A5 Leather Everyday Notebook Branding

Inside are 200 sheets (400 pages front and back) of hand-sewn, blank, white 52gsm Tomoe River Paper. The corners are curved for a sleek look.

Galen provides four templates: 7mm lined, 10mm lined, 5mm graph, and 10mm graph. Because Tomoe River Paper is so thin, these templates work perfectly to provide guidance for writing or drawing. A plain piece of leather serves either as a blotter or a pad for writing.

The notebook doesn't include any pockets or bookmark ribbons.

I tested the paper with the pens I currently have inked. As expected, the paper handled all of them admirably, although there is significant show through.

Swabs look wonderful on Tomoe River Paper:

I'm quite happy with the Galen Leather Notebook. It is beautiful, simple, and useful. It lays completely flat when open, which is another plus.

I plan to use my notebook to practice Zentangles and Mandalas.

You can purchase the Scrikss fountain pen in a variety of colors for $35.00 fromGalen Leather. The Galen Leather Notebook in either Crazy Horse Brown or Crazy Horse Forest Green costs $36.00 (Galen or $25.00 Vanness (currently out of stock).

Galen Leather Co. x Kaweco Sport Fountain Pen Review

Galen Leather Co. x Kaweco Sport Fountain Pen Review

I think it is common knowledge at this point that any mention of a Kaweco Sport Limited Edition is my “You had me at hello” moment. And who is the latest to take advantage of that? My good friends at Galen Leather, that's who.

They sent me a stack of items that have been, and will be, reviewed on The Pen Addict. Most were parceled out to the review crew, like Sarah's recent look at the Slip-N-Zip, but I pulled rank on one item. Specifically, the Galen Leather Kaweco Sport in Cognac.

Galen created their own custom packaging for this pen.

Look, I have soft spot for this pen. What can I say? I mean that literally. What can I say that haven't already said about this awesome pen. Over and over and over again. It's the best and most fun pocket fountain pen on the market.

Galen Leather Co. x Kaweco Sport Evil Eye

The interesting thing about this pen is that it is my first translucent barrel Kaweco limited edition. There was a standard issue Ice Sport release a few years back, but I don't recall another see-through LE. I feel like I have to be overlooking something obvious so please let me know. (Update: I knew it!) Regardless, this is my first, and I'd wager that it won't be my last.

Galen Leather Co. x Kaweco Sport Ink

Galen Leather nailed the color on this collaboration. As a primarily leather goods company, a brown hue makes perfect sense, but I'm not sure a solid brown plastic would have delivered the richness in color that Cognac does. It is warm and bright, yet fits in perfectly with the many different shades of leather Galen offers.

And I even love the gold trim and accents!

Galen Leather Co. x Kaweco Sport Writing

The one question I had was which ink I was going to use with it. Specifically, which short international cartridge will I pull from the stash that would compliment this pen the most? I discounted any blue right out of the gate, and even oranges didn't make it past the first cut. Then I saw the winner for this initial journey: Graf von Faber-Castell Olive Green.

Galen Leather Co. x Kaweco Sport Cognac

It's as good of a match as I was going to get with what I had on hand. The only competition in my mind would have been a purple ink, but alas, I had none around. Put some on the list! And I'll need them, too, as I see myself using this wonderful collaboration for quite some time.

Thank you Yusuf, and the entire Galen Leather team, for sending me this pen. You can get yours for $30 directly from Galen, but move quickly if interested - only Medium, Broad, and Double Broad nib sizes remain!

Galen Leather Slip-N-Zip 4 Slots Zippered Pen Case Review

Galen Leather Slip-N-Zip 4 Slots Zippered Pen Case Review

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Twitter. And check out her latest book, Out of Water, now available where books are sold!)

If you love stationery (and if you're here, I'm assuming you do), then you've probably swooned over a Galen Leather product or three. Or all of them. I've had the pleasure of trying a few, and they've all been absolutely elite in quality and construction.

Galen Leather Slip-N-Zip 4 Slots Zippered Pen Case

The Galen Leather Slip-N-Zip Case is a piece of simple brilliance. It's made of sturdy-but-soft vegetable-tanned leather, with a solid, smooth zipper. It's firm enough to hold its shape well, but is still very flexible. The insert is made from felt-backed reinforced leather, so it provides internal structure to help guard your pens. The 4 pen loops are thick elastic, tight enough to fit small pens, but stretchy enough to accommodate large pens.

Galen Leather Slip-N-Zip 4 Slots Zip Case

The zipper goes across the long edge, around a rounded corner and down one side, so it's easy to get items in and out and you can easily see everything in the case. With the insert inside, you can still fit a small pocket notebook or two inside, or a few additional pens. The case is too soft to be truly protective, so a thin pocket notebook between the pens and the case wall might provide a little extra shield. I wouldn't put four delicate, expensive pens in this case and then toss it in a bag. The leather is thin enough that you can feel the outlines of the clips and pen bodies through it. There is no lining or padding inside the leather--it's just the single layer.

Galen Leather Slip-N-Zip Case

While it's definitely designed more for transport than protection, this is some classy transport. The crazy horse brown leather shown here has a wealth of character. Each piece will be different. There's a wonderful variety of shades, patterns, and textures in the leather, and it picks up scratches and oils as its handled, taking on the character of its user. It also comes in crazy horse green and crazy horse tan.

Galen Leather Slip-N-Zip 4 Slots Zip Case Logo

Galen Leather's goods are pretty high-end, by my assessment, but the price on this piece is only $37. That's an extremely good value. It's going to arrive in a thick board box that will also contain a few goodies from Turkey. You'll feel like you've been sent a gift, because you have.
