Monarca Tierra Colorada Ink Review

While it certainly feels like a desert some days in the Southeast US, it's far from accurate. The humidity alone is an undeniable factor, but it also has a lot to do with the colors — or lack of colors — that you find in this area. I've never been to Mexico, but I've been to New Mexico, Arizona, and southern Colorado where it's easy to find desert-like conditions. There's certainly a unique beauty in the tan/brown dominated palette, and it's one I find myself wanting to visit more often than not.

Monarca inks are made in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, and feature several different collections that draw inspiration from the area. Tierra Colorada is a red-brown ink from the Semi-Desert collection, and it's quite a beauty.

This collection consists of 4 colors inspired by the semi-desert of Mexico, their names are inspired by Bizarra Capital poem by Ramon Lopez Velarde, born in Zacatecas, Mexico, who describes the landscape in an exceptional way.

Tierra Colorada is inspired by the red soil of northern Mexico, and I love the way it dries on paper. It's rich and has a wonderful earthly look. There's also a golden hue that comes through in certain light that adds some character to this red-brown ink.

While this ink behaves really well on nice paper, it tends to feather and bleed a lot on cheap paper. Since this is true for a lot of inks, I wouldn't let it dissuade you from trying it out unless you plan to exclusively use it on copy paper or cheap notebook paper.

The red-brown color is pretty strong through the ink, and it does exhibit some shading in some areas. The shading is mild and goes from medium red-brown to a darker red-brown. It's just enough shading to add visual interest and character to the dominant rich red-brown color.

In case you're curious, Monarca includes the Pantone code and RGB values of each of their inks! Tierra Colorada is Pantone 7594C and 12,58,45 in RGB. The actual ink has a lot more personality than the rigid and single color dimension of a color code, but this at least gives you a hint of what the dominant color is in digital terms.

The aspect of this ink that surprised me most is the dry time. It's a fast one! In my testing with different nibs, it easily dries before the 15-second mark when used in a wide nib (such as a medium stub or Monteverde's Omniflex), and under 10 seconds when used in a Medium or smaller nib. If fast dry times are your thing, this one does a great job.

Another interesting thing that Monarca does involves their packaging. The 30ml ink bottles come in a box, but they also come affixed to a wood base that holds the ink snug in the box during shipping. Best part of this is that you can use the wooden base to hold and display your ink! The additional sturdiness from the base and the small foam inserts that keep the ink bottle snug mean that you're less likely to tip the bottle over when using it. Plus, it has a groove in the front that can also hold a pen. One downside, though, is the diameter of the bottle's mouth. It's quite small, and some pens just simply won't fit into the opening. You'll have to resort to a syringe if your pen section can't clear the opening.

If you're interested in this ink company, check them out! The ink is well-behaved, looks great, and features unique colors inspired by natural beauty. Vanness Pens stocks the entire Monarca lineup, where you can find inks starting at $20 for a 30 ml bottle.

Monarca Arena Blanca Ink Review

Monarca Ink

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Twitter. And check out her latest book, Out of Water, now available where books are sold!)

Monarca Stationery inks are so tempting. I love the names, the look of the bottles, and the wooden stand for the bottle with the pen rest (a limited offering, I believe). There's a lot to like about what they're up to, including an array of great colors.

Monarca Ink

I love brown and sepia toned inks, so I was curious to try this pale sand color from them. Arena Blanca means White Sands, and that's a great name for this color. It's a very soft, warm brown and quite pale. It's one of those ink colors that won't work for folks who want bold, saturated colors. It's not an ink you could read easily in low light or use on kraft or brown-toned paper, but it has tons of character on regular paper.

Monarca Ink

This ink shades like crazy, and it looks so much like a watercolor painting of a shoreline. It's a very peaceful color and I dig it. Heavier application, or where the ink pools, creates a bolder brown. There is no sheen, but the shading is so intense a sheen would be too much.

The color is a complex one, and the chromatography was wild. There's a grey base, with shell pink, peach, and soft goldenrod, with a light skim of blue. The breakdown is as pretty as the ink itself.

Monarca Ink

There is no water resistance to this ink--it washes away quickly, just like its namesake. The dry time was quite slow, and I had to add a 30-second mark to see if it would stop smearing, and even that streaked a little. Dry time on this one is "eventually."

I do have two nitpicks with this ink, though. One, the stock picture sent to retailers looks absolutely nothing like the actual ink color. Look to reviews for a more accurate shade. And two, the opening of the bottle is far too narrow for easy filling. Even my narrower pens had trouble, and my Pilot 823 didn't fit at all.

Monarca Ink

This ink will be filed in my "lovely but impractical" category, which I use more often than you'd think. At $20 for a 30ml bottle, it's about mid-range on price. Not inexpensive, but not alarming. It's a fair price. Overall, I like it a lot, despite my nitpicks.

Monarca Rey Jaguar Ink Review

Monarca Rey Jaguar Ink Review

“One shimmer ink at a time Brad!”

That’s the issue I’m having right now, because there are so many interesting shimmer inks on the market, and I want to use them all. Recently, it was Jacques Herbin Shogun, and currently, it is Monarca Rey Jaguar.

So, how do I choose which shimmer ink to ink up when it is time? If these last two choices are any indication, the level of pen and ink matching plays a big role. The darker Shogun was a perfect match to my black, gold, and silver Aurora Optima, and the golden shimmer of Rey Jaguar looks fantastic in my Ferrari-themed Spoke Icon. Give me the opportunity to match, or tell a story with a pen and ink combination, and I will jump at the chance.

Monarca Ink

Monarca Stationery launched their brand with stories in mind, with two collections of four inks each. Caribbean features shades reminiscent of the Mexican seaside, and Semi Desert brings you inland. The ninth ink, Rey Jaguar, stands alone as a limited edition based on the colors of the largest feline in the Americas, with proceeds of sales going to support Jaguar conservation campaigns.

Monarca Ink

This ink is as beautiful as its namesake. There is a richness to the golden brown base ink color, with a healthy dose of gold shimmer leaping off the page as if a Jaguar were released from inside your notebook. Ok, that’s a bridge too far, but that’s what shimmer inks are to begin with, so let’s just go with it!

Shimmer Ink

I’m impressed with the performance of Rey Jaguar, especially due to the fact I didn’t ink it up to use with a wide nib. I have a stock Jowo Fine nib in my Icon and wanted to check the performance in a setup I wouldn’t normally use. The flow is fantastic, and exceeds any expectations I had of using a shimmer ink in a fine nib. The lines are consistent, and shimmer deployment is well regulated. I will try more shimmer inks in fine nibs if they work as well as this one.

Monarca Ink Rey Jaguar

Do you need this ink? That is, of course, impossible for me to answer. The color is reasonably unique, although there are other golden brown shimmer inks out there. It’s priced slightly on the high side at $26 for 30 ml, but is limited to only 600 bottles, and ships with Monarca’s unique wooden bottle holder and pen rest in each box. It’s also a fun new brand, and sales of this ink support Jaguar conservation efforts.

Monarca Stationery

Personally, I’m thrilled with it from a performance perspective, and that is the most important feature of any product - especially one new to the market. I’d have no issue recommending Rey Jaguar, or any of the standard Monarca inks, of which we will have more reviews of soon.
