Review: Muji Retractable Gel Ink Pen

Muji GelThis pen was sent to me last month by Pen Addict reader Alan, who, after seeing my previous Muji Gel review, was sure I would like the Muji retractable even more.  Good news - he was spot on!

I really liked the standard Muji gel ink stick pen, but I had a bit of an issue with the ink flow and consistency of the ink.  The gel ink seemed very liquid to me, making for a wider than 0.38mm line and a bit of bleed on the page.  This retractable model puts that issue to rest, as the line is as fine as you would expect to get from an 0.38mm gel ink pen, and the ink flow is just right - no bleed at all.  I have included below another photo comparing the original Muji gel to the retractable and I believe you can pick up the difference in the photos.

The design is pure Muji, which is to say it is very simplistic.  The barrel is lightweight and well balanced, and very comfortable to write with.  The extra ink cartridge that Alan was so kind to include has a great cap for storage that doubles as the plunger for the pen when you swap out the cartridge, 0.38mm markings and all.  I think that got me more excited than anything else about this pen because I had never seen that before.

Overall, I am very pleased with this pen and hope to put it to good use.  Thanks again Alan!
