Galen Leather Magnum Opus 12-Slot Pen Case Review

Galen Leather Magnum Opus

For all my years in the pen hobby, I’ve never owned one of the larger hard-sided, leather pen cases like the Galen Leather Magnum Opus. I think I’ve been missing out.

Big, bulky pen cases aren’t for everyone, or every situation. I should know, I helped design small, compact nylon cases for years at Nock Co.. I worked on those products for a reason: They were an expression of my style. But storage options such as this serve a purpose as well.

Galen Leather Magnum Opus

Galen Leather has been making stationery goods since 2012 from their shop in Turkey, and have grown into one of the more prominent makers in our space. I was lucky to converse with founder Zeynep about their products prior to her way-to-soon passing, and am proud of her husband Yunus, and brother Yusuf, for carrying on the family business and creating something I know she is proud of. I’m fortunate to call them friends, so forgive me if I’m a lot biased when discussing their goods. They deserve all the praise in the world.

Galen Leather Magnum Opus

So, the Magnum Opus. As the name might dictate, this is a beast of a case. It is a 12-slot horizontal layout, with a removable velvet tray for easy access, or sharing, of pens. It is hard-sided, giving it a boxy feel when closed. The closure is magnetic, allowing for a nice snap to know your pens are tucked away safely.

As their brand name indicates, Galen specializes in leather goods. My Magnum Opus is made from a distressed Crazy Horse Brown leather, and comes in several other dyed and undyed leather colors. It also comes in a 6-slot version in many of the same colors.

Galen Leather Pen Case

In use, I keep the Magnum Opus on, or near, my desk. All pens inside are easy to access - even the short ones — due to the ability to slide the pen tray out easily. The case lays flat when not in use, or I’ll stand it vertically if the situation allows.

Galen Leather Pen Case

This case is at its best when used at home, or for dedicated events such as pen shows or meetups. You’ll want to keep it vertical when moving it around, as the pens aren’t held in place other than with dividers between the slots. Placing it vertically in a bag, for example, wouldn’t be a great idea as the pens slide left and right in the case. A bag-in-bag this is not. The 6-slot case is a much better portable option, for obvious reasons.

Galen Leather Pen Case

At $159 for the large model, and $109 for the smaller model, these Galen Leather goods are priced well. Quality leather goods aren’t cheap, and given the handmade nature of these cases, you are investing in pen storage that will be around for years to come.

You can order directly from Galen Leather with fast and fairly-priced shipping options. If you are in the US, both Vanness Pens and Goldspot carry a large amount of Galen’s ever-growing product lineup, so be sure to check out all they have to offer.

Hightide Nahe General Purpose Case Review

Hightide Nahe General Purpose Case

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Twitter. And check out her latest book, Out of Water, now available where books are sold!)

I love pockets, and the Hightide Nahe case is a nice collection of pockets. These are great for building supply kits that you can mix and match and grab and go. You can make one a letter writing kit with cards and stamps, etc., make one a planner supply kit with stickers and stencils--you can grab them, stick them in your backpack, and off you go.

Hightide Nahe General Purpose Case

The case is made from PVC, which is a practical choice, although it's a bit unpleasant. It smells very plasticky and the molded edges can be a bit sharp. It may also be prone to cracking over time, as most PVC does, though I haven't had it long enough to test that theory. It is, however, an inexpensive material, which keeps the cost of this case at only $11, which is fair.

The back, sides, and closure flap of the case are in colorful, opaque material, and the front is clear PVC. The back of the case has a large slip pocket divided in two that fits a slim A5 notebook or two. The front flap closes with a metal snap. Inside the case there is a main A5 compartment that is gusseted to fit a decent sized notebook. Along the back inside wall are two clear pockets--a narrower one that fits small papers, accessories, or pens, and a larger one that can fit medium items like another notebook.

I think these are great for containing individual projects, and they're available in a lot of colors, so you can color code those projects. While they may look and feel a bit cheap, that's because they are, in fact, inexpensive, which is good, because you're going to want a few of 'em.

Livework Jam Jam Double Pouch Review

Livework Jam Jam Double Pouch

(JetPens provided this product at no charge to The Pen Addict for review purposes.)

The Jam Jam Double Pouch from Livework is a small but useful pouch that features a double opening. All of the small stationery pouches that I'm familiar with only have a single zipper and a single pouch inside to store things. The concept with this pouch is similar, except there are two zippers and two separate compartments inside the slim pouch. This makes it easy to separate different types of items into the two pouches, or simply use one side to store everything since both compartments are part of the same outer pouch.

In my use, I've been putting fountain pens in one side and gel pens in the other. This keeps them separate so I know where to find a certain pen I'm looking for. Regardless of which pouches I'm using, the overall thickness and shape of the whole thing is always the same. And when it's empty, it's incredibly flat and easy to store.

The pouch can easily fit a phone, 3.5x5.5" notebook, note cards, wireless earbuds, keys, and any number of small items that you want to safely store.

Since there's no internal organization in either side, this isn't a great option for any delicate items. Everything in there is being jostled around with everything else, so scratches will occur. There's protection between the two sides because of the inner dividing fabric, but it's thin and only adds minimal protection. Plus, it just feels silly storing only two pens in this pouch.

For me, this pouch is better used with small items that you carry on a regular basis. Writing utensils definitely fit this category, but so does everything else. Cables, hair ties, small tools, medicine, hand wipes and hand sanitizer. The list goes on, and this pouch really excels at adapting to what you put in it.

Aside from the two zippers, there's just a small loop at one end that lets you attach a ring or carabiner so you can attach the case to something else. This is great if you want to attach it to a lanyard inside your bag so it's easy to pull out of the bottomless cavern where all the big objects are stored. You could attach it to a key ring if you really wanted.

Finally, my favorite feature of this pouch: the pattern on the fabric. This one is called "Tree" for obvious reasons, and it just makes me happy every time I look at it. There are four other patterns to choose from, and they're all happy and whimsical designs. I picked Tree because I like the greens that are used in the pattern, and the happy little trees make me think of watching Bob Ross on TV when I was a kid. The fabric also has a smooth coating that feels a bit like wax, but it doesn't attract hair and lint as easily. It's easy to wipe clean and should protect the case from wear and tear a bit over the years.

Livework Jam Jam Double Pouch

The Jam Jam Double Pouch from Livework is a fantastic little case that can be just about anything you need it to be. It's versatile, compact, well-made, and easy to pack up and carry along. At just under $12, it's also a great value. If you need a small pouch (and let's be honest, who doesn't?) to organize little bits and pens, give it a shot. The biggest problem is picking one of the colorways.
