Mr. Rouge Estuche Pen Case Review

(Jeff Abbott is a regular contributor at The Pen Addict. You can find more from Jeff online at Draft Evolution and Twitter.)

You can never have enough bags, pouches, and cases, and that's a good thing because there's always a new one that fits an aesthetic or functional need for your everyday life. The Mr. Rouge Estuche is a lovely case made of leather and felt that does one thing really well and with great style.

This handmade case is on the smaller side, but still manages to fit plenty of writing instruments or other small objects. The two snaps on either side keep the top flap from opening easily and letting the contents spill out. The snaps are actually really strong, so I have no worries in terms of the case accidentally opening.

The leather that makes up the exterior of the case is supple and pleasing to touch. It has a nice aroma and a great medium brown hue that will age wonderfully with use. The interior is made of natural gray felt that is incredibly soft and thick enough to provide some good protection. I like that the felt extends past the leather on the exterior of the case, but I wonder if the felt will wear out or discolor quicker than the leather.

The straight stitching that holds the case together is well done and features a cream-colored thread that provides a nice contrast of color against the brown leather. Every corner and edge on this case is meticulously precise, and that just adds to the luxurious and high-quality feel.

There's no branding on the case outside of a red leather loop on the side of the case, which gives you a hint as to who made it (Mr. Rouge).

In my testing, this case comfortably holds 6-10 ballpoint or gel ink pens, and 6 fountain pens. It's not wide enough to hold a new woodcase pencil, but it does fit an Apple Pencil or a woodcase pencil that's been sharpened down to less than seven inches.

Since this pouch is a flat design, it bulges as you put objects inside it, so you can't overstuff it. It's not meant for carrying an excessive amount of stuff, but it also comfortably holds more than you'd think.

The Estuche (which is Spanish for case) is handmade in Mexico and retails for $26 USD from Amarillo Stationery. For the materials and precise craftsmanship, this is a great deal. I really look forward to using this and watching the leather take on its own personality as time goes on. This would make a great gift for stationery fans, but it's also great for those people in our lives who aren't as mesmerized with pens and paper since you can use this pouch for anything.

(Amarillo Stationery provided this product at no charge to The Pen Addict for review purposes.)

The First Ever Pen Addict Membership Drive Is On!

As someone who is traditionally poor at self promotion, not only am I taking a moment to do that today, but I’m taking it even further by offering my first ever discount for The Pen Addict Membership.

The main question I have to answer to you, and to myself, is why? The short version is: I’m curious. The Pen Addict Membership is a core reason why I’m about to wrap up my eighth year of working for myself, and spreading the stationery love. Your support of everything I create means the world to me.

As a Pen Addict Member, what do you get?

  • Refill, the weekly Member newsletter. I recently published Issue #401 this past weekend, exploring a recent favorite pen of mine. Each week contains similar content, such as trip reports from pen shows and other adventures, thoughts on the stationery market as a whole, how I use stationery, plus a weekly Ink Links section with commentary, monthly Member giveaways, a recap of everything I published during the week, and more. (Here is a PDF sample of Issue #399. Formatting is better via email, or through the Member site, but you will get the idea.)
  • P.A.R. (Pen Addict Rating,) a monthly grade of a stationery product. I’ve provided grades on 55 products so far - pens, pencils, paper, ink - based on my own usage.
  • TPA Chronicles, a monthly recap of what I have been using, and why.
  • Friend of the Show, a monthly(-ish) podcast where I interview other members and discuss their stationery story.
  • Discounts to The Pen Addict Shop.
  • Full archive of published content.

And who knows what else I will come up with!

Part of the Pen Addict 100 Project I am working on.

Membership is always growing and changing, so I figured, why not bring more people into the loop? Currently, the two Membership options are $48 for an Annual subscription, or $5 for a Monthly subscription.

From today, through Friday, December 1st, I am offering 20% off the Annual Membership option with the code ITS20OFF. You can also click through this link to apply the code directly.

Existing members won’t miss out, either. Use the same code to extend your annual membership and receive the same discounted rate.

While I am experimenting with discounts, I have taken 10% off all pens in The Pen Addict Shop during this same time period. While 10% on its own is great, Pen Addict Members currently have a 25% off shop code listed in the newsletter, which is valid with the additional discount. If interested, simply log in to your Member account, click “Posts” on the sidebar, open Issue #401, and scroll to the bottom to find the current code, and have fun!

The Pen Addict X Benu 15th Anniversary Pen, found in The Pen Addict Shop.

To recap, this is a limited time discount that I am running for this week only, on both The Pen Addict Annual Membership, and selected items in The Pen Addict Shop. Let’s see how it goes, and thank you for your support!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
