Visconti Mirage Mythos Persephone Fountain Pen Review

The Visconti Mirage Mythos series of fountain pens is not new to the market - Sarah first reviewed it on the blog two years ago - but they have remained interesting to me because of their wide range of styles, and the comfort of the pen every time I had the opportunity to try one out.

While I’d argue that comfort is the more important aspect of any writing instrument, I want to talk about the style of the Mythos, because that’s what made me pick up the pen in the first place.

One look at their product page and you’ll see why I gravitated to them. Sarah’s Athena model was tough to pry from my hands, and picking out my own was a challenge as well. The Orange Demeter model was a contender, and the Blue Black Poseidon was nearly the selection, but the Purple Persephone combined the brightness of the Demeter and the darker trim of the Poseidon into a fun pen I want to use all the time.

A few other points on the style of this pen that I enjoy. One, the finish is matte, which feels great. I wouldn’t care if it were glossy - there is a mixture of both in the series - but this finish works well with the hardware on the pen. Speaking of which, the Ruthenium trim is a perfect compliment to the Purple, Pink, Blue, and Black of the acrylic. I could hear Persephone herself calling to me to pick this one up because it looks so cool.

The fluting on the barrel runs cleanly through the pen from end to end, giving it a good tactile feel to go along with the matte finish. And finally, the famous (or infamous, depending on your preference,) Visconti clip looks to be at a lower profile than what I’ve seen on other models, but it could be a visual trick.

What’s not a trick of the Mirage Mythos is the nib. Only available in three sizes - Fine, Medium, and Broad - and in Steel, mine was perfect out of the box. I went with Fine, and it has been a clean, smooth writer, with a line width meeting my expectation of a European-sized Fine tip. Would I prefer Extra Fine? Sure, but I’m not going to tell the Queen of the Dead that to her face.

I inked this pen with Van Dieman’s Nightfall from their Natura Dualis dual-shading ink series, and it’s a perfect match. Well, mostly a perfect match, because on some papers - like Mitsubishi Bank - it turns bright Blue. That would be great for Athena, but I prefer the Purple for Persephone. Such is the life of a dual-shading ink!

The Mirage Mythos does have one questionable design element I can think of, but mostly it’s a pen of “considerations.” That means it’s great all the way around for me, but may not fit what you are looking for in a pen.

The design element I’m most curious about is the added band on the bottom quarter(-ish) of the grip section. It looks cool, and matches the aesthetic of the cap band specifically, and the hardware overall, but why? I think grip section designs need to be all or nothing. I like textured grips - like knurled or grooved - but a smooth area into a raised, rough area is an odd tactile choice.

I say all of this knowing that the grip doesn’t bother me, especially as a rough/knurled grip fan. I’m also a low-gripper and I’m all over the raised edge of this section and it doesn’t affect my comfort, but I’m not sure others will enjoy it.

Another consideration is the magnet cap. The attachment is strong enough to be protective, but light enough to be able to remove the cap without much force. It is also designed to magnetically post with the addition of a metal finial on the end of the barrel. It is a satisfying click, but if you are a fidgeter like myself, don’t keep clicking the cap on and off the front of the pen to prevent pressurized ink burping. I did get a few dots of ink on the nib from playing around too much, but nothing too dramatic.

At $215, the Visconti Mirage Mythos is priced fairly for the design and functionality of the pen. Is it expensive? Yes, but in the category where it resides it is a solid choice, and is far and away my favorite Visconti Steel nib pen. Hopefully they will continue to expand on this lineup in the future.

Visconti Mirage Mythos Athena Fountain Pen Review

Visconti does a good job of making their version of an entry-level pen feel very fancy. While the $159 price tag of the Mirage Mythos Athena Fountain Pen is far from beginner-friendly, it's a good entry point for those interested in trying out this luxury brand. It's also a perfectly good pen in its own right, and this one in particular has been a delight to write with for the past few weeks. It also comes in a fancy gift box that feels like a whole event to unwrap. It's not as much packaging fanfare as their other pens, but it's decidedly Extra for a pen in this price range. I generally prefer simpler packaging, but I appreciated feeling like it was my birthday for a few minutes.

The Mirage is made from a lightweight acrylic in lovely swirling colors. The Athena is in this gorgeous turquoise with pink, rust, purple, and even a touch of green rippling through. There's a subtle sparkle to it. The color is offset with brass accents on the grip, clip, finial, and cap band, which also has some textured etching. It has the classic bridge-shaped, spring-loaded Visconti clip, which gives it its signature look.

The body of the pen is lightly fluted, which helps with grip and keeps it from rolling on the desk.

The brass grip section unscrews from the body of the pen, and the body is lined with a brass sleeve that prevents a brass-on-acrylic thread connection--a nice detail that will prevent wear and cracking over time. The concentration of brass at the grip does make the pen a little front-heavy, but that doesn't have a negative effect on the writing experience.

The cap closes--and also posts--with a clever magnetic attachment. To close, the magnets pull the lid into some notched threads that keep it securely in place. The seal is good--the pen has never dried out between uses. When posting, the magnet helps secure the pen to the end of the pen, though it's a less secure connection and it rattles a little when writing. It's also quite large when posted. But it can be done! Just don't make any sweeping gestures or the cap will fly off.

The highlight of this pen, for me, is the nib. Visconti has had some nib quality issues in the past, mostly on their very high-end pens, but this gold-colored steel nib is totally dreamy. It writes as smooth as butter with the perfect balance of wetness. It's so pleasant to use that I find myself doodling between thoughts just so I can keep using it when my writing is paused.

This pen has been a delight. It was my solo writing instrument on my recent writing retreat and I cranked out over six thousand words that weekend and enjoyed every minute of the writing experience. I'm very content with this pen, but the good experience does tempt me toward someday trying one the fancier Visconti models. This one will do just fine until I cave to temptation.

Reflections on Some Currently Inked Pens

Despite being in this rabbit hole for 6.5 years, I continue to learn not just about pens, inks and all that, but about my preferences and habits. There isn’t a right or wrong way to be in this hobby and what works for someone may or may not work for you. For some reason during the past few weeks, a few of my currently inked pens were good reminders of lessons I’ve learned along the way.

On the surface, there isn’t much that is similar among these pens, other than they all happen to be blue! (Bottom to top: Pelikan M215 Blue Stripe, TWSBI Classic Blue, Visconti Van Gogh, Platinum Curidas, Pilot Falcon/Elabo.)

  • Patience (and research), Grasshopper - I have wanted this pen for 3-4 years (maybe longer) and have seen it on eBay for very high/ambitious prices. And I am definitely not one for patience. But I also don’t want to overspend. Doing research ahead of time, including reaching out to folks who have better pulses on the Pelikan secondary market, made it easier for me to pounce on a listing that was finally in the right price range.
  • Inks & pen combinations matter - As I mentioned in recent ink reviews, inks behave differently in different pens (and also on different papers too). This M215 is currently inked up with Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite, which is a lovely blue-black ink. Is it a shocker that this is a good matchup? No, not really, but I haven’t used this ink since I first tried it, gulp, way back in 2017, in a Lamy Safari. I absolutely hated the combination because it felt like writing with sand and I wondered if I should dump the ink out of the pen and get rid of the sample. What I didn’t know then, was that Lamy pens can be on the drier side and that Pelikan inks are also on the drier side (to compensate for their wetter nibs), so that combination was doomed from the start. What’s sad is that I was hesitant to try the ink again, even though I learned more about pens and inks since 2017. I’m glad I decided to try the ink in this pen, because it flows just perfectly from this pen, and it’s a great match colorwise, too. I’ve also since learned that it’s ok to empty out a pen if the ink just isn’t doing it for you. Life’s too short to write with a bad combination.

TWSBI Classic, Blue

  • Oldie but goodie - One of my first TWSBIs is the Classic, in Turquoise. I love the non-demonstrator look but I don’t really think about them as much because I usually want a demonstrator when I want to ink up a TWSBI. I needed to ink up a blue pen so I decided on the blue Classic. It had a Fine nib and even though Mediums are my usual jam, I just shrugged and inked it up anyway. Then I wrote with it and was shocked at how much I liked the Classic AND the fine nib. It is so easy to ink up the latest acquisitions and forget about the older pens (and inks). I try to balance that urge by having a mix of old and new pens in the “to-be-inked-next” tray. I do this with inks too. It’s like discovering a lost treasure.

Visconti Van Gogh, Starry Night

  • It’s ok if looks are important - As a Van Gogh fan, and more specifically of Starry Night, I love this pen. Not because it is an amazing writer (I mean, it writes fine) but because looking at it makes me happy. It makes me think about my favorite piece of art and that makes me happy. People place different levels of importance on the nib vs the appearance and that’s one of the many wonderful things about this rabbit hole. My personal pen preference emphasizes looks over writing (probably 65:35 as long as the nib doesn’t write poorly). In the end, as long as you’re happy, whether it’s with the looks, the nib (or both), it’s a win in my book.
  • Oldie but goodie, this time with ink - I inked this up with an ink that I once loved but sorta put by the wayside (shame on me) - Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo. When everyone was raving about Shin-kai (cough cough, Bossman), I instead fell in love with Tsuki-yo. With all the deluge of inks that currently exist and continue to be released, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest “must-have ink”. I had forgotten how much I liked that ink and I’m glad I decided to use it again.

Platinum Curidas, Matte Blue

  • It is not a popularity contest - Not gonna lie, the Platinum Curidas is probably one of the more polarizing pens when it comes to looks, nock length, design, etc. And yet, I still love it. I have the original demonstrator finishes but I love this Matte Blue with black trim. The Medium steel nib gives me the perfect line width. Do I love it more than the Vanishing Points or Decimos? Probably not, but I still love it, even if it’s not for everyone, and that’s what matters.
  • Don’t judge an ink before using it - I bought a sample of Taccia Ukiyo-e Hiroshige-Ruri and after swatching it, I thought “yet another dark blue ink” and was glad that I hadn’t bought a bottle. After pairing it up with the Curidas though, I’m loving the richness of this blue ink, along with its subtle sheen that can even been seen on Rhodia, and am now adding it to my “bottles to buy” list. It’s another reminder that I shouldn’t judge an ink too quickly!

Pilot Falcon/Elabo, Metal Blue

  • They can’t all be winners - The Pilot Falcon (or Elabo in other markets) is a pen that has a fun, bouncy nib that can give some line variation, which I generally love, but there’s something about this one that isn’t doing it for me. I really like the plastic version of this pen with a Soft Fine nib, but I don’t think it’s the minimally- added weight. The Akkerman Delfts Blauw ink is flowing just fine so it’s not that. Maybe it’s the Soft Medium nib which feels blobby and almost squeaky. I really want to love it, but I don’t, so I think it’s better to part ways, than to have it stay in the collection untouched and unloved.
  • It’s hard saying goodbye - Despite everything I just wrote about the pen not being a good fit, it’s still really hard for me to decide to sell a pen. I just have to remember that someone else will enjoy it more than I do and that I can use the proceeds to get something else, like that bottle of Taccia Hiroshige-ruri :-)

None of these things are earth-shattering or new in any way, but I don’t usually have these revelations when I’m writing with my pens. So when they do pop up, it’s worth taking a moment to pay attention to what they’re trying to teach me.
