Write Notepads Classic Hardcover Notebook Review

Write Notepads Notebook

I'm always excited to have new products from Write Notepads on my desk, and in this case it's the Classic Hardcover notebook from The Gentlemen Stationer's shop. Write Notepads are always a favorite around here, and the Classic Hardcover is no exception.

Write Notepads is based out of Baltimore, Maryland and offer a variety of different paper products. The stationery they sell is top notch, and I always have a hard time deciding on something when it's time to place an order. It all looks interesting, and the products I've already tried keep me coming back for more. Still, I've never tried out one of their classic hard notebooks.

The Classic notebook is a hardbound A5 notebook with smooth, white paper, a color-coordinated bookmark, and a lovely cloth cover. The pages are numbered in the bottom outside corners, which make referencing notes easy. The smooth paper has a slight amount of feedback when writing, which makes it easy to control your pen while taking notes or sketching out ideas.

There are 160 pages of 70 lb paper in the sewn-bound notebook, and they feature a light green ink for the lines or dots used to make the ruling patterns. The corners are sharp, not rounded, but this isn't an issue since the hard binding of the notebook protects them from getting bent when in a bag.

The paper is white, smooth, and great to write on. It performed well with all the nibs and inks I've tried with it so far, and there's barely any show-through on the back side of the page. It's a fantastic paper.

Aside from the numbered pages, there's a single front page that features some Write Notepads branding and a space to write some personal information, the subject of the notebook, or whatever else you think is important for the first page. No table of contents or back envelope for this notebook — just 160 pages of excellent paper ready to be filled.

The cover of the notebook really shines and adds to the excellent feel and functionality of the paper inside. This is a sturdy cover with a resilient cloth wrapping that looks great and has a great tactile quality. It does add a little bit of width and heft to the overall notebook, but it's well worth it for the aesthetic quality as well as the durability it provides. You can toss this thing in a bag with whatever else and be confident that nothing will happen to it. On top of all that, the notebook lays flat when open and stays shut when closed.

The front outside cover and spine are blank, and the back cover has a debossed Write logo. I'm a big fan of the minimal branding on this notebook, but also glad that the Write name is easy to spot if you're unfamiliar with the brand.

At $20, this notebook is a good value. You can find more affordable options, but the price of this notebook is more than fair due to the quality of materials. It will certainly stand the test of time, and the writing experience is fantastic. You can pick one up with a Slate, Cranberry, or Royal Blue (pictured here) cover, and either lined or dot grid format. If you need a durable and attractive A5 notebook, definitely give this one a look!

Write Notepads The Engineer Notebook Review

Write Notepads The Engineer Notebook Review

The Write Notepads Engineer Notebook is the notebook of my young Pen Addict dreams. And it’s pretty darn great for my older self as well.

When I was a kid, I used to hunt down engineering notebooks from the LSU campus bookstore. This is the store where many of stationery discoveries originated from, and finding those odd looking, brown-marbled cover gems was always a highlight. You weren’t going to find these on your middle school supplies list, that’s for sure.

The Engineer Notebook is Write’s take on this classic design, and they have done it right. From the cover - made from wear resistant Oilboard - to the light yellow paper, to the grid on top of grid format, this notebook is a retro dream.

So, how does it handle our modern tools? Pretty well, unless you are a fountain pen die-hard. Write’s pocket notebooks are notoriously fountain pen friendly, but the same doesn’t apply for this paper. Write mentions as much in the product description, which I greatly appreciate from them. In practice, my extra fine nibs worked well on the page, and medium and greater nibs feathered a good amount. I wouldn’t enjoy writing page after page with a wide, wet nib.

What I would enjoy is writing with everything else in the Engineer Notebook. Gel, ballpoint, rollerball, pencil, fineliner - all were excellent. The paper has a little tooth, which makes pencils feel exceptional, but not enough to notice with even the finest of standard pens.

Now, there are a ton of notebooks on the market that fit the description of average with fountain pens and great with everything else. So, what makes this one a notebook you should consider? Quality, design, and nostalgia.

Write Notepads put a lot of thought and care into the production of the Engineer Notebook. The square size (7” x 7”) is unique, as are the paper color and grid layout. And there is an even larger 8.5” x 11” Memo Pad option. I’m clearly a fan, and have the pens, pencils, and ideas to fill it with. You will have to to determine how you will use it, and what you will use in it.

Regardless of anything else, Write has added another great product to an ever expanding product lineup, and I look forward to seeing what’s next.

(I paid regular retail price from Write Notepads for the product in this review. I also have a separate business/wholesale relationship with the company.)
